Chelators like certain metals more than others. Each different chelator has its favorites.

Affinities

Each DIFFERENT Chelator... (the blue gobbling "PacMan" below)
     collects up it's "favorite" metals first,
           in order of its own binding priority or "affinity" for each.  

ICECREAM   >  BROCCOLI 
means
     "I gobble ice cream    MORE   than I gobble broccoli"
or...
"when there's no more ice cream to eat, that's when I'll eat broccoli
...but I'll still always be on the lookout for ice cream!"

If the favorite metal is not around to bind with, a chelator will chose the next best metal "fit" to bind with.
This is the periodic table, a chart of all types of matter in the known universe.
Any one kind of chelator will only bind with it's chosen set of metal types, those it was created to attract.
